Teams previously got features like Together Mode which helps make your meetings more interactive. Microsoft has been working to complete the service and help it compete with Zoom and other communications platforms. Teams has been very important for Microsoft since the pandemic.

It has quick links in the sidebar to free popular games like Atari Asteroids, and Microsoft Edge’s exclusive Surf game. This hub has similar functionality to what games in Teams sounds like.

Along with dealing other Xbox and gaming-related features in Windows 11, the company previously said that it would be bringing a Game menu to the Edge web browser. This would not be new ground for Microsoft.

This space will be for socializing, as well as networking and playing games, according to The Verge. Falling in with Mesh in Microsoft Teams, and 3D avatars, Microsoft apparently wants to create a virtual space for meetings. In addition to testing games in Microsoft Teams, Microsoft also is playing with the bigger idea that relates to plans for the Metaverse. The internal version of Teams that Microsoft employees use is usually very different from the consumer and business versions, having early previews of new features. There is, however, the chance that Microsoft might not roll this out to everyone. Instead, you can expect to see games from the Microsoft Casual Games offering, which includes Microsoft Sudoku, Mahjong by Microsoft, Microsoft Jewel, and others. It is apparent, though, that Xbox titles like Forza are not going to make it over to Teams. The scope of how these games will be integrated into Microsoft Teams is unknown, and Microsoft did not respond to comment on the matter. Microsoft Teams could get a surprising new feature that might spice up your boring set of daily meetings - though your supervisor may not like it.Īccording to The Verge, Microsoft is currently internally testing classic games like Solitaire and Wordament in Teams, for a special use in meetings and hybrid work scenarios. More information: Techcrunch, Inside Social Games. They would be able to target their audience better and offer game companies and casual gamers a better and simple product.Īs long as Apple and Facebook target casual games like a laser beam and Microsoft and Google (yes, I am adding Google here, and for very good reason) offer a myriad of over-lapping products, Apple and Facebook will remain the dominant players.Īnd game companies, no matter what business deals they strike, will continue to be dependent on Facebook and Apple for the majority of their revenues.

Why don’t they just kill all their casual game fiefdoms and just offer one simple product like they offer for hard-core gamers. I know their casual and social game approach is confusing since it took me 45 minutes to write this article just to get my head around all the changes. Wisely, Microsoft Mobile 7 integrates only with Xbox, not with Bing Games, MSN Games, Instant Messenger Games. With hard-core games, they have one single platform. It’s a shame, really, in that Microsoft should know better. Microsoft is centralizing their efforts but it’s still 3 – 4 different products. No matter where you are around the world, people will find out about your game through their activity stream. Want to distribute a game through Facebook? Use the application APIs. Want to buy or sell a game on an iOS device? Go through iTunes. It’s that they offer a single and simple games offering. The reason why Facebook and Apple are so successful in casual and social games is not just their massive user base. This appears to be a good step for Microsoft, but in the end, it will not work.

Companies like CrowdStar and Zynga must diversify off of Facebook or sell out to the highest bidder (a k a, Disney and Playdom), so this is a good step for CrowdStar. Though Zynga signed a deal with MSN and already left, this deal appears a lot more encompassing. CrowdStar, the number two social games company, is launching their games throughout the MSN Games portfolio of offerings.

Today, Microsoft is launching a series of new casual game and social game initiatives, including a partnership with CrowdStar to release their games on a variety (and I mean, a variety) of Microsoft projects. That’s Microsoft’s mantra, and it seems to work fine for them. Microsoft is launching a new foray into casual this time around social games. If you don’t succeed the first time, try again.
